According to BBC NEWS a referendum-a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part- was held on Thursday 23 June, to decide whether UK should remain or leave the European Union. Leave won by 52 % to 48%.


The idea of the European Union is to foster trade with the idea that countrues that trade together would not fight each other.

For the Uk to leave, it has to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty. The exact process of UK's withdrawal is uncertain and could take some time.
